Monsters in Esterelf Empty Monsters in Esterelf

Esterelf faces a number of threats and aside from those due to politics and the conflict between Walpurgis and mundane humans, one of the continent's constant problems are monsters. Whether they're flying magic creatures who want your soul or grotesque looking wolves who want you dead, monsters are try to pry through the walls of the kingdoms in order to get on the inside. Here, we'll tell you a bit of each.

    INCANTUS

Collectively known as Incantii, these creatures have been around since the ancient times and are said to have existed even before humans did. They share a close history with us, albeit, a bad one. Though praised as gods as well as for granting Walpurgis Cantus (supposedly) in early times, once mundane humans won the Magus War, they were forced out of the kingdoms and are banned from entering it. Of course, this never stopped the Incantii. Being natural shape-shifters, most Incantii have slipped through the cracks and search for people who are willing to make a contract with them.

General Appearance: The Incantii don't have one specific appearance as they shape-shift constantly. They have generalized black bodies, amber eyes, and unique patterns. While others may be pure black, others can have intricate colored feathers. Some may even pick a less solid form like light or smoke. The most popular form of the Incatus, however, are those of animals. Whether they're hybrid versions or take on almost an exact appearance of one is up to them. Some more powerful Incantii are far larger, such as the Greater Incantus dragon, Scath. However, the Greater Incantii haven't been seen in centuries for unknown reasons.

Incantii can also shapeshift to appear as humans, but always wear a white mask to cover their "faces" and still retain generalized black bodies they hide under cloaks or robes.

Here's a good example of what it may look like as a human (feel free to be creative, though).

Abilities: Incantii have extremely powerful Cantus magic and have no limits to using it unlike with Walpurgis who have to rely on their Anima. Generally, an Incantus specializes in a certain element or specific branch of magic (defensive, offensive, bound blades, etc). All Incantii have the ability to shape-shift, fade, teleport and, depending on their current physical form, fly. Incantii are also different in levels of strength, but the ones usually to make a contract with a mortal are those who are of intermediate to expert levels of magic. They will, however, only pick someone with a same level of skill or only slightly lesser.

Demeanor: Just as the appearances of Incantii vary, so do their personalities. While others may be violent and aggressive, others can be gentle and docile. Some push a person in order to make a contract with them while others. Most, however, are whimsical in nature and extremely tricky. An Incantus never lies, but the way the word something may be entirely different as to what a person thinks they're saying. This makes contracts something to be extremely wary of.

Defeating an Incantus: An Incantus' physical form may be attacked and destroyed, but their mantra, the Incantii's equivalent to a soul, will usually move elsewhere and create a new one. The only way to completely destroy an Incantus is to bind them and destroy their mantra. This usually lies in the vicinity of The Expiate, but some hunters are authorized to perform this as well. It requires binding an Incantus through the use of Cartic seals. The number of seals required usually depends on the number of limbs or the size. The person or people performing the binding will then call out the mantra until it appears. The mantra manifests itself as a series of glowing runes that form a phrase. Once this is burned, the physical form ceasts to exist.

    CORRUPTED BEAST

A corrupted beast is a creature that has been subject to Cantus leakage and has therefore mutated. Mysteriously, creatures of the same species turn into the exact same kind of corrupted beast and have the same abilities. It is unknown how Cantus leakage corrupts creatures so instantly, but it's theorized that their smaller, weaker forms of Anima are unable to contain the Cantus and disintegrate almost immediately.

General Appearance: Corrupted beasts vary in appearance but more or less retain certain aspects of their original forms. A bear would still look a bit like a bear, albeit extremely mutated and creepy.

Abilities: Corrupted beasts usually have strong melee attacks, but can also have Cantus-related moves. This varies depending on the specie.

Demeanor: Corrupted beasts are extremely aggressive, especially towards humans. They seem to be attracted to their Anima and can sniff a human out easily. They also respond to negative emotions and seem to be drawn towards them, but someone happy isn't going to shoo one away.

Defeating a Corrupted Beast: A corrupted beast can be defeated through magic and physical combat, however, each species has its own strengths and weaknesses. Some resist physical attacks, while others resist elemental ones. The same goes for their vulnerability.
