    Maia Tommelise Empty Maia Tommelise

Post by Kemp Fri Mar 05, 2021 12:07 pm

    Name: Maia Tommelise
    Gender: Female
    Age: 22

    Race: Walpurgis
Citizenship: Saoirse but resides in Aldmerrow now.

    Occupation: Manager for Youngsea Excavations.

Appearance: Maia is a short woman, standing at 5’2” and has a slim and athletic build. She has pale skin free of blemishes, with a round face, a slightly wide nose, her eyes are grey and have a slight angular shape to them, as well as some bags underneath. She has straight wheat-colored hair that is cut into a shoulder-length bob.

Her usual attire consists of a tailored white dress shirt with a dark blue vest, a pair of black trousers, and brown leather boots. She always wears a light blue scarf to hide the seal on the left side of her neck. She also wears a pair of black gloves, and a brown leather holster around her waist for her daggers. She has a preference for what some consider a “masculine” way to dress, though she does occasionally wear outfits that would be deemed more feminine.

Personality: Maia can be hard to get along with, something that she apparently prides herself in. She is known to be quite snarky, rude, and rarely takes things seriously. She has little respect for authority, only keeping enough so the Expiate soldiers don’t beat her in the streets. This extends to people not affiliated with the Expiate as well, and Maia usually will only be respectful when it is self-serving. She does not care about the people she makes dig contracts with, but will be courteous regardless. That’s how she makes her money after all. Her position is one of privilege given her status as a Walpurgis, and she makes good use of it, though a lot of times she uses it to make people uncomfortable.

Despite this, Maia is a kindhearted person deep down. She has trouble showing her emotions but she generally does care about the associates of the company beneath her, her friends, even her family to an extent. Maia’s been burned too many times to let her guard down, but on the inside, she can’t help it. This does cause her great annoyance. Maia can also be described as a romantic in a sense. She has fond memories of the people she has had relationships with, regardless how long the relationship was. Though her lack of trust is often the downfall to her lovelife, and as a result, she generally spends most of her time looking for a night of passion when she needs it and never acknowledging it afterwards.

While not a member of any rebel groups, she can be described as a sympathiser to the cause. Growing up as Walpurgis has been tough for her, so she understands why people resort to rebelling against the Expiate for any ounce of freedom they can get. While she enjoys her privilege of working for Youngsea Excavations, she also understands that many Walpurgis will never get the same chance she does, so she often feels guilty about enjoying the luxuries of life or not using her position to do more for the Walpurgis community.

History: Maia’s life has not been an easy one up to this point. She was the only child born to William Tommelise and Marine Moreau. William was a Walpurgis servant to the Moreau family, a small noble family in Saoirse. Marine was the oldest of Lord Moreau’s two daughters and was set to inherit his lands once he passed. She tried to be diligent in her duties as heiress, but was known to have health problems so she had a whole team of servants doting on her at any given moment. One of these servants was William. He spent a lot of time with her and quickly became one of her closer confidants. He often encouraged her to keep doing her best, even when she was sick, he liked to tell her that she was going to propel the Moreau family from small-time nobles to close retainers of the king. With his support, Marine believed that she could be the best noblewoman in Saoirse. Though as time went on, the relationship between them became romantic, and while they enjoyed their time together, they both knew it was an ill-fated courtship. They would have to end it for the sake of Marine’s ambition, but they decided to enjoy every second of their tie together before that happened.

Unfortunately for the couple, Lord Moreau found out of their relationship. He was enraged that his daughter and heir would stoop so low to court a Walpurgis servant. He ordered that William be exiled from his lands, and decided that Marine was no longer fit to be his heir. He stated that he would find a suitable man to marry her and his new son-in-law would rule instead. Marine’s world was crashing down, everything she had worked for was gone in an instant and soon her lover would share the same fate. She couldn’t lose them both, so as William left the lands of the Moreau family, she snuck out and followed him, deciding to elope with him.

The couple found a small village where nobody knew who either of them was, and while they were hostile to William for being a Walpurgis and Marine for marrying one, they never went beyond turning their noses up at them, allowing the couple a somewhat peaceful life together. As time went on, the couple built a small shack to live in and took any job they could find to make ends meet. It was hard on them but they were at least happy. The couple soon found out they were expecting a child, and nine months later, Marine gave birth to a baby girl, which they named Maia. While they were overjoyed at their new baby, they were worried for her future as she had been born a Walpurgis like her father. But they decided to do the best they could for Maia.

The first few years of her life were nothing too special, times were tough but both of her parents loved her, and worked hard to provide for her. However, when she was four years old, Marine’s poor health problems caught up with her again, and her symptoms progressed rapidly. Without the money or the status to afford medication or decent healers, Marine passed away two years later. William and Maia were devastated, and did their best to continue on without her. That proved easier than done. With William being the sole provider for Maia, he struggled to keep her fed and often had to leave her home alone because of work. He tried desperately to find someone to care for her, but no one wanted to watch or even associate with the Walpurgis girl. William began searching for old associates or friends who could take Maia in, but most people had their own problems to deal with, they didn’t need another mouth to feed. Eventually William was able to get into contact with one of the servants he had worked with. Initially she wanted nothing to do with Maia, but William provided an extra sum of denars. She agreed and soon Maia was whisked away to the capital to live with a woman named Madame Boisselot.

She would soon find that the home was not at all welcoming. Boisselot made it very clear she hated the girl’s presence. Apparently, after William and Marine eloped, Lord Moreau became a lot more cruel and made the manor a hell to work at. Boisselot, being Marine’s personal tutor and one of her closest retainers, was sacked for “supposedly” knowing about the affair. She decided to take out those years of rage on Maia, who was referred to as “The Bastard” for the entirety of her stay.

Her father sent money to Boisselot to clothe, feed, and to teach Maia some basic magic. The food she got was gross on a good day, her clothes were glorified rags, and while Boisselot did teach her some magic, the lessons were usually rare and happened quickly, keeping her at a basic level for many years.

Maia rarely stayed in the home and took to wandering the streets. She quickly found a group of street kids who ran a makeshift gang of sorts, and she began hanging out with them. Often getting themselves into trouble with the Expiate as a result. Maia didn’t like the punishments Boisselot gave her so she started to get better at avoiding the officers. This began the more unsavory moments of her life. As she got older, her gang started doing more and more. Harmless pranks started to evolve into pickpocketing and shoplifting. Maia didn’t do a lot of the crimes herself, focusing more on being a lookout, but she was small and fast and was good at grabbing things without being noticed. She also started practising her lockpicking skills, just in case.

William tried to keep in contact the best he could, sending letters to Maia whenever he got the chance. He didn’t seem to know much about Maia’s delinquency, but he was just excited for her to come home and see him once she was old enough to start working with him. However, when she was 16, the letters stopped coming. And soon the payments to Boisselot. They got word that William had been killed but nothing was really clear on what had happened. Some say that he got into an altercation with a town drunk and didn’t win, or Lord Moreau had sent men to kill him, or even that an unsealed Walpurgis killed him. Whatever happened, it didn’t matter, William was dead. And with the payments gone, Boisselot had no use for Maia. She was quickly thrown out onto the streets.

For a little while, she stayed with the gang, they looked out for each other. But soon, they parted ways. They wanted to head to Saadedge, work for the nobles there. After all, most of them were Walpurgis, so they imagined they would be in hot demand there. Maia thought about it for a while. She wondered if being a noble’s thug would be worth it. Eventually, she decided to not continue her life into crime and just start working an honest job. Her gang didn’t hold it against her and wished her all the best. With them gone, Maia had to find a new source of income, fast. She eventually signed up to be a courier, and while she was paid less than everyone else, it allowed her to travel all over Esterelf. Though the job quickly became draining on her, and the pay was not nearly enough for all the peril she had to deal with. Maia temporarily dipped back into criminal activities, though nothing too scandalous this time. She started fencing stolen goods, disguising them as packages to be delivered. But when she turned 18, she decided that she had too many close calls with thieves and the Expiate checkpoints to continue on with that work. Maia decided to leave her job as a courier and returned to her hometown for the first time.

No one recognized her there, which was fine. She just looked like a traveller staying in the area for a while. She visited the graveyard and was somewhat relieved that the villagers were not cruel and allowed for William to not only have a marked grave, but next to Marine’s. She stayed for a few hours, and did a lot of thinking about life. What does she do with her life, maybe be a mercenary or hunter? But she also thought about her parents. A bittersweet love story that ended with them dead. A bitterness formed in her heart, but she chose to ignore it.

She visited the family home, which was now overgrown with plants and dust covered every surface. Nothing too exciting was there, the family never had much to begin with. She dug around for a bit, before she found some of her father’s journals. She knew that her mother was a noble, but only knew that her father was a servant. She learned a bit about him. Namely that he was born to the Youngsea family in Aldmerrow, but being a Walpurgis, they gave him a different surname that a distant relative had and kept him around as a glorified servant, pretending that they weren’t related. This enraged Maia but she kept reading and found out that her father’s brother ran a company, and the last few years, William had been working as a laborer for him. He was digging up old ruins and such, finding artifacts to sell to the highest bidder. An idea formed in Maia’s head, and she decided to leave for Aldmerrow at once.

She had no idea what she was even going to say to these people, she imagined barging in would probably get her arrested. They were probably cruel people who hated her existence, but cruel people who might give her a job. While she was going over a million scenarios in her head, someone noticed her. A beautiful woman approached her from the house. Maia expected some verbal abuse, but the woman was very kind and gentle and asked her if she needed anything. Before she could even think, she blurted out who she was and she wanted to speak with her uncle. The next thing she knew, Maia was sitting on the nicest couch and had ever seen, being served tea by a beautiful woman. She introduced herself as Beryl Youngsea, the wife of her uncle Fabian. Maia certainly felt welcome and never expected this amount of hospitality from someone of higher standing, especially when the lady knew she was a Walpurgis.

Soon Fabian came out to greet her. He looked like a carbon copy of her father, though much younger looking, and with a leaner build. They quickly got down to business. She wanted a job, that was it, no relationship as family, just decent pay and she would do anything. Maia eventually found herself working the dig sites around Esterelf. It was backbreaking work, but she enjoyed it. It didn’t leave room for much leisure time, but she spent her free time practising magic and trying to improve. The next few years, Maia worked herself to the bone, eventually being promoted to a foreman to oversee individual operations, and more recently, she took a position as a Manager, allowing her to oversee multiple dig sites and a very nice paycheck. Maia felt pretty accomplished with what she had done so far and wondered where her life would lead her next.

Weapon: Maia’s preferred weapons are a pair of elegant daggers. She keeps the steel blades well polished and Cartic marks are engraved on the blades, which are used to enhance the strength of the daggers. The hilts are meticulously maintained as well, their light blue covering barely have any blemishes to them.

    Skills:

    • Elemental (Expert): Being the first types of spells Maia learned, she studied them as much as she could without the help of schooling, While it’s taken many years to get to this point, Maia, has gotten pretty good at this. She favors Wind magic.
    • Fortification (Intermediate): Maia is still getting the hang of this one, she isn’t the fastest at casting these spells, but they’re decent quality. She focuses on making her attacks and movements stronger and faster.
    • Transfiguration (Intermediate): Maia doesn’t use this magic often, but her primary use is to make her quiet. Make her footsteps make less noise, make her disappear into the shadows.
    • Enchantment (Beginner): Maia hates this type of magic. She barely understands it but is trying to learn it at the request of Beryl, the reason why is unknown, but she likes her aunt, so here she is.
    • Pickpocketing (Master): She’s not exactly vocal about this skill for obvious reasons, but Maia knows the best way to take something right out of your pocket. She hasn’t used this skill in years but the urge to do it pops up occasionally.
    • Lock Picking (Intermediate): Maia’s pretty good at opening locks of things she doesn’t own. Again, she doesn’t bring this up often.

Strengths/Weaknesses: Maia is fast and good with her blades. She can do a lot of damage in a short time and be out of the way before her opponent can get a hit in. She’s also pretty skilled at unsavory arts like sneaking, getting into places she shouldn’t be in, and even taking things from other people. While she doesn’t utilize those skills often, in a pinch they can come in handy. However, Maia is closed off so it’s hard for her to make lasting and valuable relationships. Her occasional vulgar attitude can put people off, and she has a tendency to make people dislike her fairly quickly. And while she is fast, she’s not very bulky, so she’s not taking a lot of hits before she goes down.

    Allusion: Thumbelina, kind of?

Incantus: Maia does not have a contract with an Incantus.
