    Ylva Skovgaard Empty Ylva Skovgaard

Post by Kemp Fri Mar 05, 2021 2:40 pm

    Name: Ylva Skovgaard
    Gender: Female
    Age: 20

    Race: Human
    Citizenship: Stalhmin

    Occupation: Medic for the Expiate

Appearance: Ylva stands at a height of 5’4 and has a slightly chubby build. Despite this, she is still very active and has some defined muscle mass. She has olive skin free of blemishes, with a light dotting of freckles on her face. She has very round and very pale gray eyes that always seem to look nervous and sad. She has a cute button nose that sits in the middle of her round face. Her hair is long and light brown, it always smells nice and looks very healthy.

When she is working, she wears the standard Expiate uniform with no modifications made. She prefers the version of the uniform with trousers instead of the dress version. She keeps her hair tied in a braided ponytail and wears a pair of small gold earrings that look like some sort of citrus fruit upon closer inspection. She is also seen with a brown bag that she keeps medical supplies and herbs in.

Her everyday wear is drastically different. She prefers simple dresses with leather boots. She keeps her hair down and it is always neat and tidy. Ylva often carries the same bag with her, as well as a pair of gloves in case she sees something she would like to pick.

Personality: Ylva is definitely not someone you would initially think was a member of the Expiate. She’s very timid, she often has trouble looking people in the eye or speaking loudly and clearly. She’s pretty introverted and prefers to study apothecary and botany in her free time. Ylva feels much more at home surrounded by plants than people, but this isn’t to say she is unkind. She’s very gentle and can be a nice person to talk to without feeling any judgement. She has a lot of respect for other Expiate members, and tries to be amicable with them. Ylva also has a very different viewpoint on Walpurgis and Enkidu than some of her colleagues. She doesn’t hate Walpurgis, quite the opposite really. She still shows respect to them and apologizes for inconveniences to them during checkpoints. On patrols through the slums, she often checks in with residents and tries to alleviate and ailments with the best of her ability. She often finds Enkidu to be better company than most humans, they don’t seem so quick to judge or make comments. Ylva enjoys talking with the few Enkidu in the Expiate and will actually stick up for them when they get mistreated.

However, Ylva is far from the weak little mouse many think her to be. In a medical emergency, Ylva becomes a completely different person. She is very calm, and often takes charge when no one else will. She’s quick with directing people and isn’t afraid to take drastic measures to save a life. She isn’t afraid to command people and her voice will carry throughout the infirmary. Afterwards, she seems bashful at her actions and will be very embarrassed if you bring it up. In the event she is unable to save someone, she will mourn them for weeks, lamenting her lack of skill. She never lets this show at work, however. Feeling it to be a personal problem.

History: Despite her name being of Eisleyn origin, Ylva was born and raised in Stahlmin, being the third generation of Skovgaards in Stahlmin. She was the second daughter and child born to Kasper and Regina, with her older sister Alfhild predated her by two years. Her family lived in the small town of Ichnen and ran a pharmacy that sold natural medicines made from herbs and other plant life. Life was pretty simple for the family, the pharmacy was never busy, most likely due to the remote location. Their biggest customers were the Jaeger Guild, who occasionally bought medicine to bring with them during hunts, just in case something went wrong. From a young age, Alfhild and Ylva helped their parents with the cultivation of certain herbs, or going out in the wilderness to find others. While Alfhild didn’t go beyond helping out her family, Ylva got really into learning about plants, she read all of her parents books about the different plant life in Esterelf and their uses. She spent more time in the greenhouse, caring for the plants, making sure they grew to be the best quality they could. Ylva decided that she wanted to become an apothecary, just like her parents.

As she grew older, Ylva began displaying quite the talent for magic. Her parents knew a few spells here and there, mainly just to help them grow plants and some healing magic if they needed to use it. They taught her some spells too, but quickly noticed that she seemed to excel at and was progressing rapidly. People used to tell them that Ylva would be good at crafting and should be focusing her pursuits in that area. Ylva was not really interested in that, she didn’t want to make machinery or weapons, she wanted to grow plants and help people. Of course, that was an old-fashioned way of thinking in Stahlmin, and people began to say that she was wasting her potential, which Ylva thought was unfair. She respected people who did use carta for crafting, but that’s not something she wanted to do. Ylva was already a shy and introverted person, but this made slink more into the greenhouses and away from people’s judgemental eyes.

As the years went by, the Skovgaard family was noticing that their business was going under. They weren’t totally impoverished, but they definitely were not making a lot of money out of the pharmacy. Kasper and Regina were worried for their daughters’ futures. They had no idea what Alfhild wanted to do with her life, and Ylva seemed to be dead set on taking over the failing shop when she was older. They didn’t want either of them to be forced into something they didn’t want to do, but they weren’t seeing a whole of options for the two girls. However, Alfhild soon decided to join the military once she turned 16, seemingly out of nowhere. She was always a spontaneous person, but this definitely took her parents by surprise. Still, they were relieved to not have to worry as much for their eldest daughter. Ylva was a different story.

Her parents were at a loss on what to do, they were debating sending Ylva to the crafting school in Ostmont. Even if she hated every second of it, she would at least probably get a good job out of it. They eventually sought guidance from a friend from the Expiate who suggested that Ylva would probably make a good medic for the organization. Her parents were skeptical at first, they couldn’t imagine their soft spoken youngest being a law-enforcement officer, but they decided it would be better for Ylva this way. She could at least continue learning Carta magic in the way she wanted to, and it would pay decently well. Kasper and Regina told Ylva of their decision. Ylva was unhappy with their choice, but she wasn’t brave enough to speak up. She didn’t want to be ungrateful to her parents for spending money to send her off to an academy in Ostmont. So she begrudgingly packed her luggage and was given transport to the capital.

The school she went to was nowhere near prestigious as ones found in Saoirse or Aldmerrow, but it seemed to still offer quality education. Ylva actually enjoyed it, the smaller class sizes made her feel at ease more, and her instructors seemed to be able to offer more in the sense of one-on-one learning. She was able to make a few friends, even a crush here and there. Ylva developed an understanding of Carta she never thought possible living in Ichnen. Still, she wasn’t exactly happy. She missed her family, she missed her greenhouse, the pharmacy, even the hot springs. Ylva wished she could be like her sister, who seemed to be thriving during her training, at least, that’s what she told Ylva in her letters. A part of her wanted to run away, experience the world, do what she wanted. But then she remembered how much her parents were sacrificing for this opportunity. They were spending the little money they had on her tuition and living expenses, they were doing this for her future. Her guilt won over her desires, and Ylva stayed at the school.

She excelled in her lessons during her years at the academy, and as promised, she joined the Expiate shortly after graduation. Ylva was quickly shuffled over to the medical team, where talent for healing magic and knowledge on medicine was put to good use. She spent the first few months working in the infirmary with the other medics, most of which was uneventful. However, she soon found herself being assigned to patrols and checkpoints with some of the officers. While her job was mostly to be there in case an officer or civilian was injured, she was still expected to perform the duties as any other officer. Which made her very uncomfortable. Ylva didn’t like asking for Walpurgis papers during checkpoints, and absolutely despised it when she had to perform an arrest. But after a while, she began to adjust. Ylva still hated her duties, but she felt at least competent at performing them.

She’s been with the Expiate for two years now, and while she is still adjusting and learning new things, her heart still longs to be in a greenhouse, crushing and mixing herbs into medicine.

    Weapon:

    • First Form: A long, heavy staff made with a dark, heavy wood. There are many golden metal decals spiralling along the staff, each one with small orange gems with cartic marks, a larger orange gem sits on the top of the staff.
    • Second Form: The staff shrinks down and a protective metal layer forms over the largest gem on the top, forming a deadly looking mace.

    Skills:
    • Healing (Master): Ylva is an extraordinary healer. She has a natural talent for it, and tries to practice everyday to ensure her skill is maintained.
    • Elemental (Expert): Ylva is pretty good at using elemental magic, it’s the only offensive magic she likes to use, so she needs to be competent. She has an affinity for water and plant magic.
    • Expiation (Intermediate): Ylva knows how to use Expiation magic, and absolutely despises it. While she will only use it when absolutely necessary, she has a decent comprehension of it. She refuses to use it unless ordered to.
    • Warding (Intermediate): She started studying warding magic to protect her and her allies when she started going out in the field more.
[‘*] Apothecary (Expert): She knows a fair deal about creating medicine, the properties of different plants (mainly their use in medicine), how to cultivate them, etc. She’s still learning but can hold her own when it comes to making medicine.

Strengths/Weaknesses: Ylva is a powerful ally to have. Her knowledge and skill with healing magic and medicine allow her to help her allies recover from most injuries and illnesses, whether they are minor or serious. Her gentle nature, along with lack of outward prejudices. allows her to gain trust easily, which is very helpful in making beneficial relationships. However, Ylva’s shy nature and reluctance to use force on opponents can make it hard for her to act decisively in battle. And her shy personality, as well as not exactly popular ideas towards Walpurgis and Enkidu can alienate her from her Expiate colleagues.
