    Name: Chief Commander Richard Veiller
    Gender: Male
    Age: 40
    Race: Human (Carta user)

Physical Description: When Commander Veiller enters a room, coldness seems to follow him. He stands tall in the Expiate's signature blue and silver coat, his differing only slightly with medals of embellishment and a white shirt with an ecru cravat peering out from underneath. Without his coat, one can see a dark brown vest and white trousers that end in knee-high black leather boots as well. At his side is his cutlass and two flintlocks intricately decorated with leaves in silver. Part Stahl and Saoirsian, the Commander's hair is a golden wheat color, short at the back but with longish bangs that hang over his forehead. His age shows not from the small wrinkles on his brow and under his eyes, but a drawn, hawk-like face and permanent scowl. His eyes are a vibrant azure color, sharp with attention, but dulled of any emotion or sympathy. Just as his position implies, his appearance tells one that he's seen many things and done just as much to be where he is today.

Role: Richard Veiller is the head and overseer of the Expiate. A Saorisian noble, Richard has made it his main priority to eliminate the threat presented by Walpurgis. Like many other leaders in Esterelf, he feels that Walpurgis need to kept in line to prevent problems such as Moira and Cantus leakage. Being of a high position, he tends to larger Expiate matters such as kingdom affairs and wide-scale Cantic threats. It's unlikely anyone unimportant would see him unless they happened to be in close proximity to a large case dealing with Cantus, but one might be able to spot him at noble events, often acting as a personal guard to the rulers present.

Background: While a noble, Richard's parents were some of the lesser nobles and not even the main lords and ladies of the land they resided on. He therefore had to prove himself when he decided to one day join the Expiate. It's unsure why he wanted to join, though it might have had to do with his grandfather once being a chief before passing away. That said, Richard's watered-down noble line and little riches prompted him to rise in the ranks through sheer skill. Studious and having a innate gift for Expiation magic, he eventually made his way into being one of the most renowned detectives in Saoirse; helping infiltrate Walpurgis rebel bases and havens. His contribution in undermining the Walpurgis terrorism a few decades back eventually led to him becoming Chief Commander in his thirties. With Walpurgis terrorism a thing of the past, he now focuses mainly on containing Walpurgis citizens, keeping them in check and smearing any trace of unrest in the second-class people. Considering how unrelenting he is towards Walpurgis in his Expiate operations, it is hard to imagine what he thinks of them personally as he married the leader of the Cordilleras. True, it had been out of negotiations for a peace treaty, but those close to him suggest there was more to it than met the eye. After his wife having fled and his daughter being atoned less than ten years ago, he seems to have developed an even larger resentment towards Cantus and he refused to let it destroy his family again or the countries he serves.

Personality: Richard's actions and words paint him as callous, unrelenting, and brooding. While always courteous and obedient to the rulers he serves, he never minces his words with them. He can sense when people want to use him, and he lays that out on the table so that they know he isn't an idiot. His ability to negotiate and persuade others whether by logic or intimidation allows him to quickly turn the table of the situation. A scenario where he should be on his knees tends to end up with him holding all the cards. That said, Richard knows when to be cautious, especially those who are more challenging to influence or he knows little about.

When it comes to his relationships, Richard is nothing but professional and rarely lets himself become vulnerable whether it's with long time comrades or his own family. Despite his coldness, there seems to be a genuine sadness about him. The few times he speaks about his family, he does so sullenly, and despite success and honor, he feels it's all for naught. He's kind towards children and on his days off, he is either spending time within a shrine praying or tending to his falconry. Perhaps there's more to him than a man who was forced to steel himself due to his circumstances, but whether that will ever be revealed is hard to know.
