Pinewood, a small village south of the mountain range has sighted a large corrupted monster nearby. It remains unidentified and is described as a big ferocious beast with rending claws that appears during storms amidst howling winds. It also seems to lead a small pack of smaller monsters. Locals have issued a bounty of 5,000 denars to whoever can hunt and kill the monster. The pack beasts are inconsequential. Gear and supplies will be compensated for to any who take the task.

Report to the town's local guildhall for information on the task and to accept it.

Pinewood was a small village a little ways from the base of the Eislyn mountain range. It was only established when an iron ore deposit was found nearby, however the village's main asset is milk and wool. The local guild hall, Falcon Point, is a map-maker guild. Its leader was a scrawny, straggly man with downcast eyes. He started the guild to explore and map the mountains and harsher terrain of Eislyn. It was a small but accomplished guild. Their guild hall looked pretty much like a two-story wooden cabin with a sign hanging out front with a picture of a bird with its beak pointing up.

5,000 denars was rather generous for hunting only one monster, but the town was a little far-off from other settlements and they didn't have much in terms of warriors, so the townsfolk were probably desperate.

A figure in a tattered red hood stared at the paper posted on the wall. There were several reasons to be drawn to it, but the most prominent, of course, was the reward. It wasn't just that it was a good reward, it was an odd reward. Eisleyn was monster-ridden in general and not much of it's country could do anything about it.

So who would be insane enough (and rich enough) to have this much money to spend? And just how bad was this monster that they were this eager to get people to come here.

The figure plucked the poster off of the wall, rolling it up and tucking it into her hood pocket, before walking into the white flurry of snow.

    ***

The guild hall door would open, wind sweeping through as an adventurer appeared in its frame. Against the white of the snow and the dark of the sky, the image was a vibrant red. Aside from the cloak, a red pleated skirt that reached below the knees peaked from below. On the figure's back, a large bladed contraption that shone black. The figure's hands reached for its hood and pulled it down to reveal...a old lady?

Well, she wasn't old but she was definitely homey-looking. Dark purple hair in a messy, mousey bob framed a tan face while large round glasses that took up half of her face stared forward. The thickness of the glasses and its mirrored coating made it hard to see the eyes that hid beneath it, but the expression on the woman's face was a soft and kind one. Loosening her robe, the rest of her attire became more apparent: a double-breasted vest over a soft white collared blouse. This woman looked like a librarian or a housewife, if anything.

"Excuse me," she'd say, her voice bright but meek. "There was a request for help around this area?"

She'd raise the poster she found with the job on it.

The cold was familiar, even nostalgic in a way. But that alone didn't make treading Eisleyn ground any easier for Kassandra, not only due to the unforgiving biome, but due to the memories that drove her away from her family, from her past life. Sometimes in her dreams, the scene itself is relived in all it's detail, causing her to wake up drenched in sweat, and with a feeling of dread and regret she is forced to shake off. But today, it was different; today she had a more compelling reason to enter Eisleyn: A bounty.

An unknown beast needed to be exterminated, and the offer was 2000 denars, and there would be compensation for any lost gear. It was too tempting to decline, despite the rather mysterious nature of the bounty. Nevertheless, Kassandra wouldn't turn down a bounty like this, leading her to stand in front of the guild in Pinewood. The door creaked with her appearance, as she saw someone else seemingly beat her to the punch. In contrast to the lady, a muted dark blue cloak enveloped her, with traces of snow shinning on her black hair, her cheeks and nose red from the cold and remarking her otherwise pale complexion.

The poster of the job was held in her hand, and she stood behind the older woman to wait her turn and request the job, not even bothering to find out who she was.

Just as the women called out, they'd hear the sound of things falling over and clanging.

    "Ah! One moment, one moment!"

The guild hall looked largely empty but they'd hear the sound of shuffling footsteps and thumping wood before a straggly man came out. His glasses sat on his large nose, his graying hair was combed over a balding spot. He wore the heavy clothing accosiated with the Eislyn folk who beared with the winter, but it was obvious that clothes were practically hanging from twigs.

"Y-You're here for the monster job?" he asked shakily as he went up to the women. "Oh good. Oh good, that's wonderful! Please, have a seat..."

He'd look around but every chair in the hall had stacks of books and paper.

"Well I'd make you some tea, but we're out of coal..." the man rubbed his hands together worriedly and bowed his head apologetically. "Sorry I'll get to the point. Yes yes, the mayor of the town issued an award for the monster. It's located somewhere uphill, in the mountains."

He pointed to his right for the general direction he meant.

"It's quite dangerous, but if you can defeat it and bring back the spear, you'll be awarded handsomely." he explained. "We're even prepared to supply gear and rations. If you accept the job of course."

The woman in the red hood made a small, warm smile.

"I'm more than willing to help out a few townsfolk," she said. "Though, your ad didn't specify much about the beast save for that it's large. Do you have any more information on it? Protective skin, magical abilities, that sort of thing?"

The woman took notice to Kassandra as well, but couldn't quite make out her facial features just yet. Not that it mattered, she expected individuals to be curious about the quest. Even somewhere as forsaken as Eisleyn.

Seeing as how apparently the other woman was also aiming for the same hunt, Kassandra walked out of her imaginary queue line and stood next to her, not even bothering to spare her a second look, as her focus was set on the man speaking. Now that would explain why the reward so high, the bounty came from up high, the mayor themselves. But either due to having a ton of experience, or probably having some sort of condition in her mind, Kassandra's face didn't move away from its regular stone-like frown at the news.

The woman at least showed experience by first asking for specifics regarding the characteristics of the beast. "What kind of supplies will you give us? I already have my own gear, unless we need something special for that beast?" She asked, her tone being her usual tired voice. One that might sound familiar to the mysterious woman next to her...

The scrawny man took off his glasses and started cleaning them with the edge of his shirt.

"Yes. Well it's... big.... and rather nimble..." The man seemed to have trouble coming up with descriptive terms. "And, it's been reported to be accompanied by a pack of smaller monsters... sorry that's essentially it. I wish I could tell you more, but it always seem to show up during a snow storm and we have no creature experts in this town. Oh! it primarily attack with claws and fangs so aside from its size I don't think it has magical powers."

The man scurried off and dug around a side room before quickly coming out, weakly dragging a pair of packs.

"We can supply mountain gear and camping equipment," he explained. "This is the best we can do. I believe we'll have clear weather for a few days, but my astrological calculations have been off for a while. If you're going after this thing, I implore you to be careful."

Tala perked up slightly at the voice of the young woman. From the side of her gaze, she looked at Kassandra before paying attention to the man. Ah, she supposed it wouldn't be easy getting information on the beast just like that. That it was surrounded by other smaller ones was useful, though. It gave Tala an idea about how much magic she might have to use.

The man offering the packs made Tala feel hesitant. Normally, she didn't like to use the supplies of the towns here. She knew how badly off they were. However, it might be risky to not take it. She quietly promised herself to only use the supplies if she really needed to. Taking one of the packs, she gave a nod.

"We'll do our best to," she said.

Finally, she gave the woman next to her a proper glance. Kassandra most likely wouldn't see it due to Tala's thick lens, but the latter's eyes widened with surprise. She restrained herself, however, and gave her a smile.

    "Shall we, then?" she asked.

If the man were to pay attention, he'd see Kassandra was giving him a look as if she was trying to burn through his skull. The way he gave them very little in terms of details for the beast was rather discouraging, and outside of knowing it has a pack, as well as the climate having some sort of effect on it, she and the other woman were given almost nothing to work with. She would have shaken him to see if he could spill something else, but the man looked like he would crumble into a pile of bones if she did so much as nudge him. Usually that would make her refuse the contract, but considering the reward in question... she'd bite the bullet.

    "... Very well."
She said, biting back any unpleasanties as the man handed them supplies for the trip. Would they need to perform climbing? Well, as long as Kassandra doesn't have to carry that woman. "We'll defeat it and bring proof, you best have your reward ready." She said, her words being like one of a greedy bounty hunter, despite her looks being a more somber one. When the woman spoke up, Kassandra turned to her without changing her expression, giving the two a clearer image of each other.

And then, something struck Kassandra as... weird. A strange sense of familiarity came to her, as if she saw this woman, but when?

The guildmaster waved them farewell as they set off. The town was pretty empty and dreary looking. People seemed to have shut themselves in their homes, either that or the population was just that small. If they headed up the direction indicated, they'd see a pretty wide girth of icy plains and in the distance they'd see the mountains. The skies were clear and the the winds were at normal degrees. As the guildmaster said, there was no sign of storms to come.
