Takes place after The Sky Garden

After what happened at the Sky Garden, Commander Veiller had five main problems. One: for some reason, the sleeping Moira inside the botanical dome had for some reason awoken. Two: the attack had caused a major disturbance in the academy. While the situation had been pacified almost immediately, a large force of Expiate members arriving and the inhuman shrieks of a Cantus monstrosity were enough to cause the students and staff alike major concern. Three: that Cinq girl. She was appearing more and more. While he could brush it off as her just being another snooty noble, there was more to it. She had influence, and that influence was concerning. Four: His daughter almost died. Five: She hated him even more.

Sitting at his study, Richard knew he could only manage so much at once. The Moira was gone, that was good, but the investigation on what had happened was still underway. As for the academy, he would be meeting with the headmistress and the Prime Minister tomorrow. The threat the Cinq girl posed was not yet entirely known, so he would simply need to keep an eye on her. She was arguing about renovation needs, but at least that would mean her moves would be where he could see them. As for Liseran?

    He sighed.

She had tried to run. Again. Fortunately, Yuan had found her. He had a healer check on her again that night. It wasn't that he doubted the ability of his forces' healing during the attack, but there was the issue of how she felt afterwards. He knew too many officers who became shaky after a near-death experience. Someone couldn't hold their gun for a week because it reminded them of a shoot off or the sound of birds triggered their memory of a murder of corrupted crows killing off one of their partners. Liseran had, for all accounts, seemed fine. But the girl never gave anything away, and that made things harder to tell.

Leaving his desk, Richard moved to the balcony. The sunset painted strokes of yellow along the shingled roofs below. He could see the winding roads below. Mazes of houses crammed together at different ground levels. The atmosphere relaxed him. He closed his eyes as he took in a deep breath. He could hear horse hooves tapping lazily against the cobblestone streets. Busy town chatter was lulling into soft murmurs and goodbyes as stores closed. A gentle breeze touched his face before trailing through the nearby woods, making a whistle as it did. How long had it been since he last got to appreciate the quiet of Aldmerrow?

He had been posted in Stahlmin for over seven months and minus the visit to Saoirse and Eisleyn, every dusk was met with chugging motors, honks, and people rushing.

"You say you're a city boy, but you're a country man at heart," the soft voice of a woman said.

    "Althea?" he mumbled.

    Richard's eyes opened.

He was leaning a little too close to the balcony's edge, almost as if he was going to fall over. Perhaps he tired.

Well, he had left things for Yuan to deal with tonight as he had affairs early in the morning. He could take the rest of the evening off. In fact, maybe he could take a stroll around town before bed and--

In the distance, there was a loud boom. Bright light followed afterwards. Little tongues of flames and smoke rose to the air along the main road. The quiet erupted into panicked screams.

    "Gods dammit," he murmured.

Rushing to his chair, he slipped his trench coat back on and headed down the stairs.

    "Greta!" he shouted. "Jacques!"

Two house servants met him in the foyer, one an elderly woman and the other a rotund man.

"Master Richard, did you hear it?" Greta said.

"Yes," Richard replied. He started loading the bullets of his pistols. "I'm heading out. Call the station. Have them send forces to the Main Road and the marketplace. Immediately."

"Right away, Master," the woman nodded as she rushed towards the phone.

    "Jacques, where's Liseran?"

"In her quarters, sir," he said. "I'm not sure if she heard the explosion."

"Good," he said. He was now rummaging a cabinet for extra ammunition and charge stones. "Have her come down to the living room. Keep the house locked and stay together. Understand? Tthe minute the station says things are calm, arrange for a coach from Delilah's to come pick Liseran up for Janwynne tomorrow."

    "Yes, sir," Jacques said.

    Finishing up, Richard rushed outside.

"What about your horse, sir?" Jacques called out from behind him.

    "I'll run!"

Making motions with his two fingers, Richard cast a glyph on himself, bathing him in  yellow light. He soon began dashing at a remarkable pace and towards the explosion. The moment he got there, he almost froze.

As citizens were running, others had created a barricade. Men and women gathered with scenes and flags. The signs themselves were nothing new. "NO MORE OPPRESSION!" "WALPURGIS RIGHTS" and things of the similar sentiment. But it was the flags. A yellow crescent moon engulfed a sun against a blue background.

For the second time that day, Richard's blood went cold.

    "It can't be..."
