    Name: Tourmaline Cardona
    Gender: Female
    Age: 22

    Race: Cartic Mage
    Citizenship: Stahlmin

    Occupation: Beginner Researcher

Appearance: Tourmaline is a bit on the short side, though still pretty average-- probably around 5'4". She has, also, a pretty common feminine build, not ugly, not head-turning attractive. Her face is a bit round, with a nose that's on the larger side. Her mouth is a notable feature, being rather clean, with bow-lips; while she's pretty average in every other way, she's always been a bit proud of her mouth, along with what comes out of it, since she's a pretty decent singer. Her hair is long and black, though it's always kept away from her face with a pin containing her medium and namesake-- a tourmaline. Her clothes are pretty standard, shirt and pants, or a skirt if she feels fancy.

Personality: Tourmaline is rather lonely, at least right now, as she moved pretty recently and left her family and friends behind. Her personality can be described as somewhat cold, to those who just met her, though she obviously has empathy-- she just has trouble expressing it. She's really excitable when it comes to topics she loves, which are magic, music, and mathematics; she calls them the Big M's.

Despite her initial shyness and slightly alien perceptions of other people, Tourmaline really enjoys new people, especially those that are from particularly unique walks of life. She very much enjoys meeting Cantus users, as their unique perception and way of life has always been interesting to Tourmaline. She has a large amount of compassion for these people, as she is an Atoned Walpurgi herself.

Tourmaline has a large amount of distrust for the government, feeling as though they never really stopped tracking her after they sealed her; she distinctly remembered a few people following her after she started learning Carta, even though she had gotten atoned willingly. She also feels like they treat Cantus users far too harshly, and sometimes, violently. She regrets being watched so closely (or so she thinks) by the government, as she would like to start up a highly illegal smuggling service for non-violent Cantus users.

Tourmaline has great fears of large bodies of water, Incantii, and the theft of her research.

As to character flaws, she's pretty distrustful towards Incantii, and anyone who has a contract with them. This can lead to coldness and even a certain amount of hostility. She also has, as mentioned, a very alien perception of other people and the way they feel-- she can miss a lot of social cues, making her seem very awkward, even unpleasant to be around. This manifests itself in reading the wrong emotion and replying as such (i.e. if someone seems angry, she might mistake it for sadness, and respond accordingly).

Tourmaline has a high opinion of herself, in regards to intelligence; she also is very willing to show off her musical talent at just about any second.

Tourmaline also just about instantly thinks badly anyone who initiates violence, even if provoked verbally. She has a tendency to want to break fights up, but she's kind of bad at it, in the psychological sense (she's quite good at casting shields and healing spells).

History: Tourmaline was born and raised in Saoirse, where her family had lived for many, many generations. Whether it was true or not, her father was very proud of the "fact" that they were descended from some of Alter Mas's students. Every family member was enrolled into a Carta academy as soon as they were old enough, and even before then, their parents taught them basics.

Except for Tourmaline. Tourmaline, it was discovered, could not do Carta. Fearing it wasn't just an ineptitude on her part, and rather that she was a Walpurgi, her father quickly sent her to live with her Uncle Greg-- another outcast of the family, who, rumor had it, had made a deal with an Incantus at one point. Her father told her it was because their family was hired often by the government, and her inability would be noticed immediately, and atoning had the chance of ending in death; Tourmaline suspected it was because the man was too proud to tell anyone that he'd had a Cantus daughter.

As time went on, Uncle Greg went from uncle to father-- more than her own father had ever been. Indeed, around the age of ten, Tourmaline began calling him "Daddy," which Greg took immense amounts of pride in. After swearing her to secrecy, Greg-- who, as it turned out, was a Walpurgi, and was in the process of making a deal with an Incantus-- began teaching her how to control her abilities, using them sparingly. He explained that he was just about as weak as they come, and he didn't even have the power of a ten year old Walpurgi, so he was teaching her what he could with limited resources. This was also the reason he was trying a contract with an Incantus, though he was being very careful with the contract. He said that they'd been negotiating for years, and he still thought there were years to come.

In addition to this, Tourmaline was discovered to have an incredible thirst for knowledge, along with the intelligence to follow up on it. She was enrolled in a rather prestigious school for noble children (avoiding as discreetly as possible all the magic classes), which took every penny Greg had, but he swore it was worth it. After just a few years, she graduated with a firm grasp on the higher ends of mathematics and science. Now, at the age of fifteen, Tourmaline was given a choice by Greg.

He was proud of her, he explained; but that school had cost him ever cent he had, and they were now almost out of house and home. There were two choices. One, Greg would set Tourmaline loose with her new knowledge, and pray that she could make a life on her own with it. He didn't say it outright, but it would leave him homeless, and likely dead within a few weeks, as he was getting along in the years. Choice number two: they both turn themselves in for Atonement.

Greg had met a witch hunter, he said; except he didn't really hunt them. He looked for Cantus users who had, despite their powerful magic, fallen out of luck. He would turn them in for a reward, which he would split fifty-fifty with the Cantus user in question, and tell the government that they had been completely cooperative-- hopefully earning them a good, albeit magic-free, life.

Tourmaline opted for the second choice.

The night before they were to be turned in, though, Tourmaline was woken in the middle of the night by an ear-splitting, "WHAT?!" The Incantus that Greg had been negotiating with had learned of what was to go on, and suddenly revealed a lot more power than he ever had while with Greg. Tourmaline fled, almost corrupting herself in the process. But she knew that Greg didn't make it.

And so Tourmaline began a new mission: find and seal that son of a gun that had killed her daddy. Knowing that she'd need Carta for Sealing and killing the Incantus, she still turned herself in-- might as well get some money out of losing her magic. So she did so. While incredibly terrifying and painful, the Atoning process didn't kill her, and she immediately used all her money to travel to Stahlmin. People had heard of the Incantus-related death, and knew it was her adoptive father; they also knew she disappeared for a mysteriously long time into the Expiate HQ of that city. Tourmaline wouldn't really be accepted anywhere here, so she left.

While travelling from Saoirse to Stahlmin without magic was an ordeal, Tourmaline managed it. Her somewhat prestigious schooling earned her a spot as an intern for some private researchers, who were essentially looking into just about anything that would power things without magic. She then enrolled in a Carta Academy, now able to learn it freely without Cantus restriction. This was when she was 18.

Four years later, Tourmaline had gotten enough schooling from the Carta Academy to break free and practice on her own. She had risen from intern, to assistant researcher, to a full fledged researcher of her own (although she was still at the bottom of the totem pole, as these things go). Her revenge mission had fallen somewhat to the back burner, although she retained a desperate fear of Incantii from it; she still planned to kill the monster, but until then, she was content. She was moved to a new research facility on the other side of the country, but despite that, things were mostly looking up.

    Weapon: Tourmaline Clip
    • A small clip that mostly just keeps her hair out of her face. The clip, however, has a small lever at the bottom that can be used to detatch the two halves of the clip (and gem) from each other
    • When the detachment is done, the clip extends into to full daggers with half a tourmaline gem in each of the hilts. (Note: This still acts as a single medium, in terms of how much it can store; it just can come from two different places)
    • If wanted, the hilts can be placed together to turn into a shortbow; Tourmaline usually carries four or five arrows on her body, with the assurance that she'll mainly be using spellcasting if she's fighting from a distance

    Skills:
    • Shielding: Tourmaline can cast a barrier on the ground, wall, or etc., that nullifies magic going through it. The shields work by a straight plane shot upward from the glyphs. Since Tourmaline has been doing this for a while, she's gotten quite good at it, and can block almost all mundane uses of magic-- that is to say, it would take a creative use of magic to get past her shield. She can create a total perimeter of 20 ft, arranged in any shape she wants. This can stand for a minute before it breaks down. (Expert)
    • Sealing: Tourmaline is versed in the methods of capture and sealing of Incanti. (Intermediate)
    • Healing: Tourmaline knows quite a few healing spells, from stitching skin back together to sucking out infection to mending bones (though for the third, she usually needs to borrow another medium to accomplish) (Intermediate)
    • Enchanting: Tourmaline has recently been training to be an Enchanter (Beginner)
    • Transfiguration: Tourmaline very good at Transfiguration, her own tourmaline clip being able to transform among three forms. She's a very skilled transigurer, though the only weapon-based transfiguration she has is her clip; most others are just practical things, like having an outfit that can change between casual and formal, for example. (Master)
    • Computation: When given time (1 hour+), Tourmaline can compute the projectile physics of... Pretty much anything. This has a range of up to a mile, with an inaccuracy of around twenty feet for any distance above 1000 feet
    • (Anti-Skill) Kind of Bad: Tourmaline's a pretty inexperienced fighter, having mostly dealt with small beasts and such during her travels
