Takes place after Entering the Badlands

It was both fortunate and unfortunate that the sandstorm swept in. On one end, it had helped Eun, Higini, and Heinrich avoid an all-out battle with the Incantus. On the other end, it seemed everyone had been swept up into different directions. The lady had vanished before the sandstorm took full effect, leaving the three adventurers to the mercy of the winds.

Other individuals who had been near the area were most likely swept up as well and now people would find themselves scattered further into Dearmad than previously expected. One such individual was a Ami.

Coming from one of the settlements a little offways from the Aldmerrow border, she had been tasked with fetching water at a nearby ground well. It was annoying that the people at the settlement couldn't just "magic the water" like other settlements with Walpurgis. Just as she was filling up the second vase, she saw the clouds in the distance and made a run for it. Not like it helped, though. Now she was getting up from the sand and trying to pull free from the dunes. She managed, with a bit of effort, much like pulling away from the moderate grasps of her eager siblings asking her to play.

Ami looked up, raising a tanned arm over her brow to look as to where she was. She couldn't find any of her vases. Oh, and she was going to get hell for it if she lost them. Annoyed, the girl with dark curls that reached her waist and a silk saya trudged forward.

Well this was just not Ren's day today. Here she'd traveled ALL this way in search of some rumored ruins and, instead of the archaeologist she was supposed to meet up with, a sandstorm met her instead. While, it wasn't too big of a deal, it wasted some valuable time (and maybe buried her archaeologist). Still, as long as she ACTUALLY made it to the ruins, it would all be worth it. The stories alone would be great!

Though, some valuables would be nice as well...

So here she was, walking idly along as she poured some sand out of her Oud. She always kept at least one instrument on her, and this journey in particular had her feeling nostalgic. She gave it a few test strums before turning it over and playing a small jig. If the archaeologist was alive out there, he'd know well enough to go towards the music, she didn't really want to hurt her voice yelling after all.

Plus, if the storm somehow drew any danger towards her...Well she already had her best weapon out.

As she moved along, her body began to move in time with the music, a grin formed on her face as she simply began to enjoy herself. No use letting something as trite as a sandstorm bury her spirit. At the end of the day, this could make a hell of a story.

"That's one...and that's two!" Ami said as she picked up the two clay jugs from the sand. Tucking one under her arm, she looked inside the other and shook it. The tiny speck of light that filtered into the container helped her see there was a good bit of water left in it, but that there was also a lot of sand that had settled in. Ami scowled and tipped it over.

"What a waaaaste," she said. "Ngayatis man!"

She'd hear the footsteps of someone else coming along and Ami quickly dropped the jug to reach for her dagger. A girl was coming her way, and while she didn't know her, the stranger looked like no bandit at least. There was only one way to find out.

"Hoy!" she shouted at Ren. "Are you really there or are you a mirage?"

Her smile only grew wider as someone called out to her, didn't sound like the person she was looking for, but it was a person nonetheless. She paused her song with a bit of flourish, turned and smiled at the stranger. "Last time I checked I was really here." As she spoke, she looked down at herself in mock wonder. "Who knows though? Perhaps I died in the sandstorm and now exist to beguile cute travelers?" With a wink, she began to lightly play once more. She couldn't help but notice the dagger, depending on how this conversation went, she might end up needing to 'beguile' this traveler after all.

"Nevertheless, you are looking at the Jewel of Saadedge. Also known as Ren Everett." she puffed out in pride as she introduced herself. She had no idea if she was even known outside of Saadedge. But hey, a bard could dream right? Despite her apparent relaxedness, Ren made certain to not get too close to the stranger. While the stranger didn't exactly scream 'bandit' to her, a dagger in frightened hands could be just as deadly.

A flush of color spread over Ami's face when Ren winked at her, and for a moment Ami staggered.

"I-I...g-get to the point!" she stammered as she waved her dagger clumsily at Ren.

The stranger later explained they were a bard and the so-called "Jewel of Saadedge".

"Forgive me, but you hardly look the part," she deadpanned.

Ami then sighed and slowly sheathed her weapon.

"Whatever, you look harmless enough," she stated. "I take it you got swept by the sandstorm too? Do you need to find your way back?"

Sandstorms were a pain. They made you get lost, they made it hard to breathe, sand gets everywhere no matter what you do. Amberley really didn't like them. She was used to hostile conditions in Dearmad, it came with the location, after all. But normally if something like this happened, she would dive into her cabin or seek shelter in the temple. So of course it had to happen during the day she went to a town in Aldemerrow to purchase some supplies. What luck.

She didn't have time to find shelter, so she wrapped a scarf around her face and used her warhammer as an anchor to keep her from flying off.

She stood up out of the dune that had surrounded her and began shaking the sand off.

"Damn, that was a close one!" She said. "I was hoping I wouldn't need to take a bath today! Ugh, what if an Incantus catches me with my trousers around my ankles?!"

The fact that she was talking to herself probably indicated that she wasn't entirely there mentally, but she was used to speaking aloud at this point. It's not like there were any other people around to speak to or listen to her. Well, there were, but they weren't usually friendly.

After making sure her bag was attached at her hip, her weapon in her back, and shaking some sand out of her breastplate, she was ready to head out. Despite the sandstorm, she had a pretty good idea of where she was supposed to go, but before she could head that way, she heard some voices.

Amberley tensed up at the sound. While she loved to talk to people, hearing them usually meant a fight was going to happen. And she was definitely not in the mood for a fight. She could easily keep walking, but there was something in their voices that made Amberley curious.

She made her way towards them, climbed up a dune, and looked down at them. Neither of then looked exactly well-equipped. One looked like she was doing chores when she got swept up, and the other... The other one looked very flamboyant.

She cleared her throat and spoke to them. "Ladies, this place usually isn't the best to have a friendly chat in. Tends to draw the wrong kind of people and creatures."

Ren's smile could only grow wider at the girl's reaction. Dagger waving aside, the blush was definitely a good sign. At the girl's next words, though, Ren seemed to deflate a bit. "Well you sure know how to hurt a girl's feelings." As quick as her smiled faded, it quickly made its way back. "There are many types of jewels though. Maybe I'm just, 'in the rough' as it were?" She shrugged, noting that the girl had finally sheathed her weapon.

"Well I, personally, got swept in by the intoxicating stories of ruins, riches and adventures. Sadly, those stories didn't include sandstorms." She took a step closer to the girl, now slinging her instrument around her back. "Now, I'd like to press on and go to the ruins, but I'm afraid my guide may have perished." She took a step closer, leaning towards the girl slightly before speaking again. "Now, I was wondering if yo-"

And THEN she was cut off. Ren could help but jump as a voice cut across the area. She looked straight up, taking in the new stranger. Ren studied her for a few moments before speaking. "I certainly hope you aren't included in those groups." Despite her words, she gave a pleasant smile to the new stranger. "We were simply gaining our bearings."

Ami kept attentive as Ren explained her story. The more she listened, the more she felt less scared and more unimpressed, but her mother had always told her to never judge a book by its cover. She was going to offer Ren help getting back, mostly because she didn't like the idea of someone dying on her conscious. Plus even if Ren happened to be helpless, being with someone when people or Incantus could pounce you at any moment's notice. The fact she was a blonde and bright-eyed cutie was a plu--

Ami shook the thought from her head. She could feel a buzz of warmth in her cheeks, but played it off as being the heat.

In the distance, someone called out. The first thing Ami saw was a bright red. The kind of red that you saw at the tips of a fire at night or a shiny sunstone. It was an Enkidu with ginger hair and she was warning them about sitting idle. Trying to keep her stiff exterior, Ami called out.

"Yeah, yeah, I know," she said. "This one and I got caught in a sandstorm is all. I'll be heading my merry way back to my settlement. What about you two? If anyone's lost, I can probably get someone to ride you back to the borders."

Now that she thought of it, it was weird for an Enkidu to be all the way out here. Humans? Sure. Walpurgis were runaways and mundane humans were digging up ruins for whatever pompous purpose. But an Enkidu...

Ami made a mental note to keep her guard up. The woman looked armed, too. She couldn't risk getting attacked since she had no magic and her knife skills could only take her so far.

Amberley shook her head and laughed at Ren's comment. "Don't worry! I'm just a friendly Enkidu who got caught up on the storm!"

She didn't find either of then particularly threatening. It wasn't because she didn't think either of them could kill her if they tried, she had learned that underestimating your opponent was a good way to die as a mercenary and living in the dead lands.

She looked at the other woman. "I know where I need to go, and it's not back to the border. However, the storm might have thrown everything off. Are you sure the both of you know how to get back home?"

She then proceeded to slide down the dune towards them. She took the scarf away from her mouth and smiled at the two of them. "Would you like me to help you find your way back? I see you only have that little butterknife with you, as well as those vases, which will make fighting any corrupted beasts, Incantii, and crazed Walpurgis a little difficult."

She looked at Ren, and then back at Ami. "I don't know what her deal is, but I'm sure she could help out in a pinch too, yeah?"

Amberley backed up a little, continuing to smile at the two, but then began thinking. "Wait..." She said. "I pissed off this Incantus one time and I think he's still trying to kill me. I don't know, I haven't seen him in a while, but you never know! He likes to call me a putrid beastwhore, which is incredibly rude! I'm only one of those things!"

Ren and Ami would probably realize that the Enkidu was definitely not all there. It probably wasn't the best idea to trust her, but she did know Dearmad like the back of her hand, and she was an experienced fighter, so they definitely had some pros and cons to weigh out.

Hmm, friendly Enkidu. She wasn't really a fan of them herself. Less for the fact that they were immigrants and more that they could weaken magic. Magic was kind of her thing. As she got closer and began to speak, Ren idly rested a hand on her scimitar, just in case of course.

In response to knowing how to get back home. "I was trying to get to a ruin myself and would still like to travel there if possible." She got all the way out here in the first place. A stupid storm wasn't going to change her plans. "If you're not planning on leaving, where are you going then?"

The Enkidu's next little assertion left a confused expression on Ren's face. What did she mean 'her deal?' Though, the look was gone as soon as it showed. Instead, her usual mischievous smile took its place. "I'm a warrior-bard by trade. Good with sonnets, serenades and stabbings." She let out a small giggle at her own title before the enkidu started ranting. Oddly enough, Ren didn't seem too perturbed at the woman's odd behavior.

"Putrid beastwhore hmm? You must've left quite the impression. I'd love to hear that story sometime." At that moment, something occurred to her. She looked seriously at Ami for a second. "By the by, if you're still intent on going home, at the very least I can escort you there. 'Tis a dangerous place we're in. You're very brave to have come alone in the first place."
