Day 3: Alraune Rosalia; [continuation of Day 2 Floral Garden]

Post by Lilac on Tue Jul 17, 2018 4:08 am

On the final day and the height of the Unanimity Fair, people were gather in the floral garden event. It couldn't have been more than about two dozen visitors, but it was certainly a much larger turnout than normal. The people were scattered about, enjoying the smaller sights. It was some time before noon and people passed the time until the main event occurred. It was still moments away but the Alraune Rosalia, an arctic flower the size of a man was already showing signs. The closed-off petals had loosen very slightly and had shift in hue. It would bloom in full at noon just as predicted and it attracted many botanists and admirers to witness the rare flower blossom at the height of its cultivation.

Despite being such a rare exhibit, there were practically no guards expended for the event. The garden was a traditionally small attraction, so it did not warrant that much security. The closest thing that looked like a guard was a young kid standing in front of the Alraune a little to the side.

He was scrawny with a baby face. His chestnut hair was in a crew-cut like a soldier. He wore brown cloth britches and a cotton tunic. what looked like a small chest guard was strapped to his torso and he wore leather gloves and boots. At his side was a sheathed longsword. He was trying to stand at attention but kept fidgeting and glancing around nervously with sweat down his brow. Any amateur can tell the kid was greener than most broccoli stalks.

Other than him, there weren't many notable people there except for maybe a pale man with suspenders sitting on a stone bench a little ways away from the great bud, scribbling fast on a leatherbound notebook.

"Come on, come on, come on!" Aleph said to Aspen as he pulled her into the garden. "It's happening! It's finally happening!"

He had been waiting desperately for the beautiful flower that was the Alraune Rosalia to bloom ever since he first saw it in the garden the day before. He never knew that a place as harsh and unforgiving as Eisleyn would create such a lovely and wonderful plant. And of course, he didn't forget about Duke, as much as Aspen didn't seem to trust the man. But who cares about that? All Aleph cared about was seeing what was quite possibly the biggest and most enchanting flower he had ever seen in his entire life!

He quickly led Aspen back into the garden, wading their way past the crowd so that they could see the gigantic bud. He gasped as it saw that it was already beginning to show sighs of blooming. He sighed in relief. "It's a good thing we made it here early." He said, smiling. "For a minute there, I thought I was going to miss out on the biggest opportunity of my life! Boy, that would've just sucked!"

There was energy in the air. Many people feeling giddy and excitement, maybe a bit of anxiety, due to the coming ending of the fair. Many people were going to miss the event, and eagerly wait for the next opportunity in the future, and in the meantime, they decided to take in the last events the fair had in store for them. Between them, there was a rather young adult, who was going to the fair for the first time. He wore a dark brown sleeveless tunic, the bottom rim barely raching his knees, a white shirt, and brown pants, an attire that, while it wasn't very refined, it was the best he could put on for the Fair.

Having heard of it many times, he didn't have the opportunity to visit it, due to how he spend in a rather isolated community most of his life. And now that he was old enough, he decided to embark on his own, wanting to see what all the buzz was about, and hopefully get some inspiration for his artistic endeavors.

And what better way to fuel them with the Alraune Rosalia? He was definitely no botanist, which caused him to be very marveled at the specimen, how it was slowly changing forms. It is said that once noon hits, it'd bloom completely, and he was more than curious about how it'd look once it was open.

As Aleph and Aspen were entering, the young man's eyes turned from the giant flower, to the many smaller flowers on display. There were so many types, with so many attributes and colors, and it made him wonder briefly if he could get a flower to bring back home. Maybe one that reminder him of...

Suddenly, Aleph spoke out loud how he was almost going to miss the blooming, which made the man realize something: He had no idea how long they had until it bloomed. "Uh, excuse me, do you mayhaps know the time?" Higini asked Aleph sheepishly.

The crowd grew steadily as noon gradually approached. Some botanists and florists were inching there way towards a closer view so to have a closer look at the peaking bud. Some were look at their books of botanical life and showing others their scholarly knowledge of the unique flower.

As the crowd grew, the greener than broccoli young guard started to fidget more and more nervously, glancing up at the sun constantly as if trying to estimate the time of day by its position.

Aleph smiled as he eagerly waited for blossom to bloom. He took the chance to look around at the crowd. He almost couldn't believe that so many other people also wanted to see the beautiful Alraune Rosalia bloom. It warmed his heart to see that they all appreciated nature as much as he did. However, he couldn't help but feel somewhat concerned for the little boy with a sword, presumably keeping guard over the giant flower. Poor child.

Anyways, Aleph was suddenly pulled from his reverie by another boy asking him for the time, to which Aleph frowned. "Oh, I'm sorry." He said. "I don't have a watch."

    "Shucks, that's a shame."

But even if he didn't know the right time, Higini could notice that the tension and the amount of people were increasing with each passing second, as everyone was preparing for the main event. Of course, the rest of the flowers were still showing their beauty as noon approached, but the attention was being absorbed by the Alraune Rosalia. Maybe later he'll browse the rest of the selection, for now, he'd merely stare at the biggest one.

"I say, this is very exciting! Travelling from Eisleyn was a tough trip, but this fair is making it worth the effect, especially with such a magnificent display." He said to Alpeh, as his eyes were still on the flower. "If only there was a way to capture the moment... Then again, it could also reduce the magic of seeing it in person."

"Do you really have to shout our names??" Aspen hissed. "All the more for the Eisleynians to have a reason to behead us!"

Aspen was trying her best to hide in the crowd, and it worked for the most part. She couldn't say the same for Aleph. Goodness, it was bad enough he was loud, but it was even worse that he was the only idiot she knew that would go around wearing a bright pink cap.

Aspen trudged her way over to Aleph, a wide scowl on her face. She looked at the bloom in question, but even if she loved nature, she was too paranoid. Okay, there were no guards, but the one in charge of the event was a frickin' knight and she'd be damned if they ended up talking to him again.

A young boy passed by asking for the time, Aspen almost jumped thinking it as someone ready to arrest them. Hearing the nearby lad speak, she couldn't help hear that he was from Eisleyn.

An Eis? Here? I thought the princess banned travel of locals, she thought. Curious, she added to his remark.

"Indeed," she said. "I can't imagine how tricky it would be to transport blooms from the rocky Eislandic terrain, especially with all the broken roads. Aleph, we've seen the flower now, can we leave?"

Aleph immediately perked up as the other boy mentioned travelling from Eisleyn. "Oh, you're from Eisleyn? That's awesome! My friend and I are actually on our way there." He said, gesturing over to Aspen for a moment. "I heard around that Eisleyn has hot springs around somewhere, so we're going to see them. Maybe, if you want to, you could come with us."

In all fairness, he really wanted to tell the other boy all about why they were really going to Eisleyn. He just really could not, in good conscience, deliberately lie to people like this. However, he also knew that he couldn't just tell anyone about it. Especially not with so many other people possibly listening in, including the Archknight Duke and gods knew who else. But, at least, he could have a new companion on his travels.

He looked over at Aspen and frowned. "We can't leave yet! The flower hasn't even bloomed yet!" He said. "Please? Just for a little bit longer!"

And suddenly, a voice shouted at their direction, causing Higini to turn in confusion. The source of the yelling turned out to be a woman, who seemingly knew about Aleph, and had an apparent dislike towards Eisleynians. "Oh dear." He thought to himself, as she complained to Aleph about wanting to leave. "Ah, you are? That sounds neat! There are various locations I can recommend to you two." He said, before suddenly startling to blush about regarding the hot springs. "W-Well, I am from Lamiden, and we do have quite a few hot springs there..." Coming with them was not really optional considering he lives there.

Higini then stood besides him, as Aleph tried to convince his companion to stay a bit longer. "Tis true, the main event is the flower's blooming, said to be a spectacle well worth the wait. Besides, there are multiple flowers to observe all around us." He wasn't exactly a botanist, but he could still notice the importance and beauty each kind of flower each. It was definitely that, and not the fact that he was also a bit impressionable.

Aspen wanted to groan and grab Aleph by the collar. Did he really have to be this impossible? They were already risking themselves showing up here! They most definitely did not have to stay that long. With that said, she sighed.

"I don't see why it's important we see it bloom," the huntress said, trying to stay calm. "Night lilies bloom and close nightly; Santarii, weekly! Why does this have to be such a special exception when you can watch flowers bloom by the day?"

She sighed and massaged her head.

"Fine, just--just keep quiet!" she said. "And try not to attract attention. This is embarrassing as it is."

Upon the lad mentioning he was from Lamiden, Aspen's face drained of color. She wanted to jump back and scream. Of course she had to run her mouth about Eisleynians within earshot of one! She really wished she could shoot herself with her arrow sometimes. That said, she tried to keep her composure and gave a warning glance at Aleph. Did he want them to be discovered for treachery?

"Err, yes...it would be a nice vacation," she told Higini. "The healing properties of the springs, so suggestions would indeed be most welcome. Also, yes, the tender to the flowers yesterday told us quite a bit about how important this bloom was. I suppose these things you have to witness for yourself in order to comment on."

Secretly, Aspen wished the other night's drinking contest had killed her of alcohol poisoning so she wouldn't have had to endure the amount of paranoia she felt at the moment. She sighed and crossed her arms.

"Errr...by the way, how is Eisleyn doing nowadays?" she asked. "I've heard the blizzards were quite harsh last winter."
