Where the Wild Things Are; [Open]

Post by Lilac on Sun Jul 15, 2018 8:25 am

Somewhere in an idyllic little village in Aldmerrow, there was trouble afoot. The cause of the mischief was innocent enough. A mincemeat pie, baked and left on a windowsill to cool. Everything was just fine, and idyllic, the housewife just turned her back and thought no more of it.

But across the street and on the roof. A small huddled figure was watching. The woman turned her bag and ignored the baked treat for a time. The one on the roof leaned in and waited for a bit after that. Then the pie was gone, then the figure was gone too.

    ---

On the ground level, twenty paces away, a boy with wild looks scampered into a blind alley clutching something. HOT! GOOD! SHOVEL IT IN BY THE HANDFUL!

So far Liseran had found no trace of Remi's mother. Her resources told her that they had so far found nothing about her in Dearmad, and time was running out. It didn't help that her father had "grounded" her, and she was confined to staying in the academy. Of course, that didn't stop Liseran from sneaking out, though. The girl was planning to meet a comrade in the villages nearby the academy in order to see if she found out anything else.

Liseran was walking about in her typical dark blue and violet mage outfit with her bandolier wrapped around her waist holding her two silver bells. A blue cloak wrapped around her and tied in a white bow at her neck, serving as a way of disguise just in case some of her father's men were around. As she searched for her friend, she passed by an alley way and heard noise. It sounded like someone eating rather recklessly. Peering in, she noticed a boy that looked quite unruly trying to scarf down as much food as possible.

Liseran was aware that some kids were often orphans or unable to find a bite, and she wondered if this was the case now. With her hood still on, she cautiously moved towards the figure.

"Excuse me?" she said softly. "Are you okay over there?"

Grab a handful, chew it up, swallow it with relish. He had dug though half the pie in that exact order until a voice called out to him. After that, he sat up in a flash and jerked his head until he got a look at the source. He went from wide eyed to giving her a narrow glare and a snarl.

He growled at her and clutched his purloined pastry protectively close to him as he backed away. His eyes darted here and there looking for a possible escape route. He had to get away! And with the pie, too!

Seeing the odd reaction of the child, Liseran flinched a bit, but she raised her hands with her palms upward as if to show she was unnarmed.

"Whoa, whoa! It's okay! I'm not here to hurt you! Please don't go!" she said quickly.

The behavior of the child was...odd to say the least. He seemed rather defensive and, err, uncivilized. That said, she had to make sure not to make any sudden movements with him. He didn't seem like an insider of Estermount. Did he live in the boons perhaps? Whatever the case he looked tattered and in need of a good feeding and grooming. Maybe she could help him.

"I-if...if it's more food you want, I can give you more," she said a little more softly. To demonstrate, Liseran slowly moved to her satchel at her side, keeping her other hand up. From it, Aenerl would see something wrapped in white cloth and smell the faint whiff of beef coming from it.

Unveiling the cloth, she'd show a meat bun of sorts and slowly extend it.

"Here," she said. "Do you want it?"

He didn't make any big movements either. Instead he just kept gradually backing away with his prize and kept up a defensive posture. That changed when she brought out some more food. Rather than edging away he was leaning forward and cautiously taking small steps towards her.

    Closer, closer…

Then in a flash, he snatched the preserved meet out of her hand and bound up a low wall by some stacked crates. He sat there on the slanted surface and glared down at the woman warily as he started tearing into the new food with equal relish.

Liseran had to resist flinching from the sudden move the boy made. He quickly retreated back into the stack of crates and hastily started eating the food eagerly.

From the way he's eating, he looks like he hasn't eaten in awhile. Or...forever, really.

She decided to wait patiently for him to finish or become near finished to eating the food before bending a bit to be at his level, even if he was a distance away.

"I have more at my home," she said. "You look like you haven't eaten in awhile. You can eat as much as you want if you're okay following me. I promise I won't hurt you."

She wished she could offer more than that and get closer to him, but from her own experience with runaway Walpurgis she had dealt with, she knew better than to force someone. Rather, it was about gaining enough trust.

To show she was serious, she'd open her satchel and show an apple and another wrapped meat pie. Thank god she had been planning to walk long today.

It didn't take long before he was done. He finished off the meat with vigor. It was tougher than the usual things he ate, so he wound up grasping it with both hands and tearing off chunks of it here and there. At points he didn't even bother chewing. When he fel it was small enough to safely swallow he just threw his head back and did just that.

And when he was done, she was still there. He tensed up again as she spoke and regarded her with narrow eyes full of suspicion. It had been a long time until he had spoke to someone else, but he could still make out the words. Kind of.

She was offering more food, but he didn't move from his perch. Aenerl's eyes flashed from the food to this strange woman and then he had made a decision.

"Go…away" Those wore the words he wanted to say he got up and started climbing further up the roof. He had gone out of sight.

Suddenly a small tear in the air appeared in front of Lisern, a small hand reached out though it and grasped for the apple.

Observing the child's mannerisms, it was becoming more and more apparent that he was not from around these parts.

Liseran had no time to think, however, as he started going up.

"Wait, no! Don't go!" Liseran called out.

She was caught off-guard when she saw the tear of what appeared to be magic in front of her and a hand grab out for the apple. But this had no familiar buzz of Cartic marks, no.

A free Walpurgis child? Here of all places? she thought.

As the hand reached out for the apple, Liseran would try to quickly grab at the arm. If she succeeded to grab it by the wrist, she'd start pulling.

His hand found purchase and he grasped the apple and tried to snatch it back. But not before the annoying woman had reached though and snapped onto his wrist. From somewhere just out of sight, Lisern was able to hear a startled yelp.

This was followed immedately by Aenerl's attempt to bite her, putting his teeth directly against her knockles and putting all his jaw strength behind it. The portal was going to snap shut the moment she pulled her hand out of it, and then it was going to be time to flee.

"Gaah!" Liseran shrieked as the teeth dug into her hand.

Liseran would quickly pull away and grab her hand to see a few indent marks. She'd whirl enough quickly, however, to see that the portal was gone.

"Dammit!" she said under her breath. "If someone else finds him, that's gonna be trouble."

Liseran used one of her stones to cast out a mark of minor healing on her hand before casting out several marks to create a light that pulsed faintly.

"He shouldn't be that far..." she said. With one hand focusing on the detecting light and the free hand pulling out her bell, she cast a glyph from which appeared her sending, a figure made out of Cartic marks that had the body and ears of a rabbit, and the wings, feet, and beak of a crow.

"Alright, Crabbit, find that boy," she said.

The Crabbit would make a small squawk before morphing fully into a raven and going up into the sky to look around the roofs, hoping to see the boy.
