Eat or be Eaten; [side quest - Up to 4]

Post by Lilac on Sun Jul 15, 2018 4:03 am

    Job Request:
WANTED: Seeking abled hunters and warriors in the village of Tolheim. A pack of corrupted beasts have taken settlement in the nearby wilderness, terrorizing our townsfolk and disrupting work. We require the aid of strong warriors to exterminate these monsters until they have all have been purged from our area. Payment of 250 denars for each slain monster will be given. To our knowledge there are up to 20 of these monsters and possibly more in the area, totalling up to 5,000 denars paid upon completion.

The corrupted beast in attention is the infamous Chimera breed.

    Name: Chimera
    Description:
A dangerous monster who is a hybrid of various creatures. Chimeras come in all forms and sizes. It is a general rule that the more heads a chimera has, the bigger it gets and the more dangerous it is. It possesses a tough hide extremely durable against weapons and magic but they also have tears in their skin in various parts exposing muscles and tendons along as being their most vulnerable parts. Despite this common weakness, chimeras are extremely dangerous. All chimeras seem to share a narrow and small stomach and seem to not require feeding for long expanses of time. Despite this they are extremely territorial and seem to kill out of either aggression or sport. Caution is highly advised when dealing with Chimera. Most seem to travel on their own but very rarely they may join packs in respect to dominance.

    Abilities:
[*] Chimera - A carnivorous appetites with benefits. Chimeras possess an ability unique to them that made them what they are. When a chimera consumes another living creature, it somehow grows a head resembling whatever they had eaten as well as gain some sort of trait from it.
[*] Fire Breath – Any mouth can breath a powerful blast of fire.
[*] Chimera Venom - Chimera fangs and claws can secrete a powerful toxin that numbs and paralyzes humans and creatures. it spreads across whatever body apart was bitten but seems to dilute before reaching further. The venom eventually wears off on its own (one turn cycle) but getting bitten on the torso can mean complete cardiac arrest and paralyzed lungs.

Any abled warriors may travel to the village of Tolheim and come to the local warrior's guild. Captain Boris Stonehammer will provide more information.

    ....................

The village of Tolheim was small and simple. Situated next to a river, it had a wheat mill and a logging cabin situated along it. The town hall was situated in the far back and family houses were scattered near it. There was also a general goods shop and a blacksmith a ways from it with an inn between them. In the center of the town seemed to be a cathedral of sorts with a bell tower. To the direct left of the village entrance was a building as large as the town hall with a sign sporting the image of a battlehammer, the emblem of the local warrior's guild and the town's personal militia.

Another day, another dinar. This time the little hamlet was called 'Trolheim,' was it?

Whenever there was a notice of a hunt, Heinrich started to smell gold (and blood, and some other things not to be mentioned in polite company), that was about a week back or so? More than long enough for him to set his bush wagon that doubled as a rolling headquarters, crafting lab and hunting lodge down the way into the village square. The yoked mule pair that puled it moved in a kind of bouncing lazy, but steady tandem and the wheels bounced mildly along at the pace.

There wasn't much in the way of decoration on the cart, at least not in the traditional sense. Bear traps, large hammers, shovels, pickaxes, all the tools of a trapper or sappers trade were carefully hung on the outside by way of a hook here or there along one side or the other. There was even a long pike secured in place on the right end.

The rider of this vehicle was a plainly dressed man, dull greens and drab browns, with his hood pulled down. Every curious onlooker was met with a smile and a 'How do you do?', but no real attempt at conversation besides polite platitudes as he was walking by.

At least until it came to a stop in front of the Trolheim guildhouse. He hopped off the end and walked right in the door open. He stepped into the abode of the warrior's guild with all the good cheer of a guest welcomed inside."Well, this is a fine afternoon isn't it? You'd never think there's some accursed beast crunching down on some poor fool's bones right now, eh?"

Despite the big smile and the poor greeting, the lanky man was taking it all deadly serious. There was a real problem with corrupted beasts that had to be dealt with and so long as they were paying per head he supposed that he was up to the task.

It annoyed Liseran to no end that she had to constantly travel. True that her mistress trusted only her with certain things, but to look into a particular kind of corrupted beast on the opposite side of the continent?

Liseran sighed and pulled the edges of her hood closer to her face. No one here probably recognized her, but she didn't like eyes on her just the same. If you looked interesting enough, people were bound to remember you. Not that her attire at the moment was inconspicuous. She was wearing her signature blue cloak, something that practically swallowed the mage's dress she wore. A large white bow kept the thing together.

Just do your job, and you should have no problem, she thought to herself.

She gently touched Weeping Cerinthe which was clasped on her sash. So long as the pair stayed in its separate pouches, it wouldn't ring--something Liseran had to be careful about. An accidental sound could lead to her clothes setting on fire or shooting an ice shard in her face.

Liseran checked her map and then her surroundings. This looked like Tolheim, alright, and now her only problem was to find the warrior's guild. This was not hard in itself because the guild's establishment was painfully cumbersome compared to the rest of the buildings and houses there. They also had one of those tacky guild signs.

The girl made her way there with hopes to be the first one there, but found a young man instead. She caught the last bits of his sentence and frowned.

Well, isn't he perky? she thought.

One of the Hunters had arrived a day earlier with sibling in tow. Hooded in the clothing of scholars to cover armor and other features, this particular Hunter was a relative newcomer that had made a name for themselves over the past year or so of work. The Silver Fang they called him, it was a moniker based upon his grey hair and the silver shine his sword had before it bit into its target.

The Hunter's name, however, was Sam Althaus and he was moving towards the local Guild House after a grueling verbal battle with his little sibling. The same little sibling he had left behind at the Inn --- where she would stay if she knew what was good for her.

Curse the stubbornness of younger siblings and their penchant for wearing upon their elder's patience. Sam was the licensed Hunter! Sam would go on the Hunt.

This argument had occurred as Sam was preparing his gear. Moria Bane was safely secure in its sheath with safety hook in place to keep it from falling out. His hidden blade was secured, the safety latch was secure to stop false responses, and its spring was in good shape. His Sgian-dubh was safely in his boot to keep him aware of his Sister's condition. He had all ten of his throwing daggers sharpened and ready for use.

This would probably be a group job, given the Chimeras relative danger. So Sam had to keep his guard up around both creature and team.

All it took was a well-educated Cartus user to figure out his magical secret.

All it took was a keen eye in behavior and anatomy to figure out he was actually a she.

Sam had been lucky so far not to get caught by any observant individuals. Luck had a tendency of giving up the ghost at the most inopportune of times.

With Hood over his head, Sam entered the Guild Hall --- almost running into the back of a taller woman with purple hair. The Hunter could only grunt in exertion as he stopped himself from bumping into her.

"Pardon," came the monotonous voice in a soft tone as Sam stepped around the woman and allowed his steel-gray eyes to run over her. Possible Noble, didn't see them often in this neck of the wood. Possible Mage --- Cartus? It would be most likely due to the region. Hmmm --- could be an issue, if true. Hopeful not an Expiate suck-up and hopeful not observant.

Sam moved towards the counter, passing by a taller and older man that seemed competent --- at least in appearance. Hopeful not an overly observant individual. As soon as he got to the counter, the Hunter Tags came out to identify that he was registered. "Sam Althaus. I'm here for the Chimera job." the monotonous tone not changing at all in his voice --- nor the softness.

Inside the guild hall, the adventurers find a rustic interior matching the exterior. It looked to be one big room with a staircase that led to the upper balcony that from the main floor can be seen to feature a bar with a pyramid of wine barrels behind it. The walls of the main floor were decorated with pelts and antlers from accomplished hunts. Dead center was a large fire pit, the base shaped like a massive anvil, and surrounding the pit was a wide table of stone with simple chairs. There were plates with discarded bones and tipped over goblets along the table. It was most likely where the guild members gathered for supper. To the left of the pit were racks of metal weapons and a ring surrounded by wooden guard rails, a place for sparring. To the right were oakwood shelves of books and three small tables.

There were handfuls of warriors wearing both armor and leather spread along the guild hall. When the adventurers came in, greeting them was a wooden table with papers spread across and a large man scribbling along them.

He was a large man, looking what seemed to be 6' 4" with a tight muscular tone and a bronze tan. The man wore a bronze chestplate that looked molded to his chest and abs. A short red cape hung from his shoulders. His arms were bare from the shoulder down, save for a studded leather brace on his right and a metal plate glove on his left hand. His chainmail leggings tucked into his armored boots. Standing on its head to his right was a big stone hammer with a short handle.

When the group all filed in almost in unison, he scribbled one last line and set the feather quill in an inkpot and looked up. His facial features were as chiseled as his abs. He had blue eyes the color of sapphire, and a nose that hooked downward. His scalp was shaved and he had a grizzled stubble on his jaw.

"Ah, so you're here for the job," he stated. He places his hands against the table and pushed himself up, the table creaking under his weight until he stood at his full height. "I am Captain Stonehammer, leader of this guild. I'm the one that sent the requests."

He shifted some papers around, all the while giving the three people before him a quick once-over. "You probably all know this coming here but let me brief you on what you're facing," he stated. "Chimeras are a breed of corrupted beasts with a nasty ability. Whenever they feed, they grow an extra head and gain a trait from what they eat. They all seem to share the common abilities of poisonous bites and breaths of fire. Luckily their evolution seem to come with a very small stomach. They rarely need to eat but they are territorial and kill for either sport or aggression."

The captain produce three papers and spread them out in front of him. One of them was the same character sketch that was featured on the request fliers. The other showed a large stag with the hind legs of a mountain goat and a long reptilian tail as well as scale along its back and neck. The head of a snake and a goat sprout from each shoulder. In the third sketch was a wolf who looked like its lower half was cut off and replaced by the upper half of a mountain lion, the midsection stretched and bending in odd directions.

"Our village is built near a thick forest and beyond it is a small mountain. The area is widely populated with wolves, snakes, deer, mountain goats, and even some mountain lions. You can also find a good number of birds and the like. These are only some of the chimeras we've seen but the ones on the fliers are the most common. We've counted about twenty in the area but there could be more."

The captain narrowed his eyes and huffed, his finger tapping against the table.

"I'm going to be blunt, these creatures have been terrorizing our village for some time. Hunters aren't able to venture into the forest without risking a run-in with these beasts and sometimes they would wander into the farmlands and Guardian forbid when charge into the village. We've managed to slay three of these before now but we need to purge the threat for good. My warriors are capable but I can't spare many of them for this. I need them ready to protect the farmlands and the village and the guild is only twenty men strong. That's where you three come in."

Stonehammer crossed his arms, his expression grave.

"As promised, you will be paid per head. Not literally mind you. For each chimera you fell, we will pay you two hundred fifty denars." The captain seemed to mostly be talking to Heinrich at this point and giving unsure glances at the other. "I will admit, most of you seem a little too young, but stranger things wander these lands. If it seems you aren't capable of the job, you will return to the village immediately. Now, it's best that you travel as a group. We have supplies here at the village so stock up what you need at the general store. Gather in front of townhall when you're ready."

Stonehammer let out a mix between a sigh and a groan. He already looked tired, apparently not accustomed to giving such lengthy briefs. "Now then, any questions about the job? If not, then you may go."

Well, then! This was a merry bunch! No doubt a plucky, rag-tag group of travelers that didn't get torn apart by wild beasties! There was a most proper lady who all but screamed 'Mage', no doubt either giving back to the 'little people' or in some dire straights if she was tangling with common monsters with the pleebs.

The young lad got a second glance from Heinrich. Registered hunter, as well as he was. But seemed even younger than he was when he took up the hunt. Unless…nah, not worth poking to hard into. If they were older than they looked, didn't matter, or if something else was afoot, you didn't poke your nose in too deep.

He gave Stonehammer his full attention as he spoke, arms folded and nodding along with a carefree look. If anyone looked in his eyes as he nodded there was not so much a devil-may-care glance as an intense and anticipating stare.

He shrugged his shoulders at Stonehammer showed uneasiness. "All respect that's due, I'm sure they know all their steps and when to keep their head down. Otherwise, they just might be crawling back to town with less bits 'n pieces than when they marched out!"

It wasn't just abrasiveness for abrasiveness' sake, the person who couldn't hang usually outed themselves by barking a little too loudly at even the slightest challenge. It didn't matter to him where they chose to die, but if they were effectively being grouped together it would reflect badly on his reputation if someone died on his watch, no? Best to weed those out early as possible.

He moved right onto serious questions. "Is there a way for us to get current as possible sightings of any of them? Areas? Known configuration? The estimate of 20, is that just based off the encounters you can confirm are separate Chimera or is the basis that that's the most this area would support? It's up to us to find their lairs or did we have a few lucky sods run off and live to tell the tale?"

The questions came rapid fire and to a single point: 'Just what are we dealing with, and what can we use?

Liseran slightly frowned at the remark and upturned her nose.

"I appreciate your concern, good sir, but I am more than capable of handling the task," she said with the formality of a school girl. "I won't go into detail, but I've dealt with Incantii and large corrupted beasts before. I'm sure the others here are just as good."

She shook her head when the man asked about questions. She already had a gist about what the chimera were and the older man in front of them had already asked a good deal of questions.

Liseran glanced at the boy on the left. He looked to be more or less Liseran's age, or a little younger. She waited to see if he had anything to ask, either.

The young lad listened patiently to the Captain as he explained the job. It sounded simple, though the task itself was obviously difficult.

    Search and Destroy.

That was the name of the task. All they had to do was seek out and annihilate all opposition. The creatures themselves would be difficult to kill though. The comment about his age was something Sam was used to hearing, so the stoic expression under the hood didn't change much. It wasn't even enough to get him to comment.

"Would you happen to have a map of the area we are hunting in? Knowing the terrain would be good in this type of hunt," Sam asked Stonehammer softly. Sure the older Hunter had asked about the area, but having a map would work even better than spoken direction.

Stonehammer listened to the adventurers' quarries and gave a small smirk with a chuckle.

"Excellent questions. You're professional hunters after all," he said. "Sadly, those are questions I can't easily answer. You see, chimeras are roamers and they don't stick to one designated area like most animals who guard their territory. It's an odd occurrence for so many to be in one area, but one way or another they've formed a pack and the entirety of the forest is their claimed territory. It's hard to pinpoint where or when one will show up, so it's literally a blind hunt, guardian protect you. We haven't pinpoint their lair but based on the pattern of sightings, they seem to come down from the base of the mountain, so that's where you'll fight your way up to. It'll take two days to travel that far so bring camp gear.

"As for the number, well that's up to the number of chimera sightings there have been the past month, each one assumingly a different one based on accounts. Luckily, no one has died yet thanks to fast legs and every hunter here an accomplished one.

"As for your map, you won't have to worry. Just gather what supplies you need and gather in front of the town hall. Good luck and may he watch over your hunt."

    "Yeah, I see."

The more he heard, the less good this job actually sounded. Beast of this type acting in concert and they think the manpower they got is gonna be enough for a clean, neat total subjugation?

Stonehammer's buttering them so badly at this point he's not surprised his breath doesn't stink of Heinrich's own breakfast of yesterday.

…still, he took the job without complaint, he'd already agreed to the job, better to take his chances with tooth and claw than do something unprofessional like reneging.

"Well, fellow fools. We got our errand. Let's figure out how we'll live though it to spend that money, eh?"

They had a whole lot of nothing to work with other than the basic vague. 'It's bad an in all the forest.' and left to figure out the rest on their own.

"Let's get the supply and cook up how we're going to pick off as many stragglers as we can and force them to split up, eh?"
